There's something utterly enchanting about creating a piece that celebrates the hidden magic beneath our feet. With Leafy, I wanted to capture that moment of pure wonder when we realize how interconnected everything in nature truly is.

This 16-inch mixed media sculpture emerged from my fascination with the secret conversations happening in forests—the mycelial networks that link trees, the spores that travel on invisible currents, the leaves that reach skyward while roots dig deep. She's a fantastical being born from this underground kingdom, crowned with a vibrant mushroom cap from which spring leaves on delicate wire stems, as if her very thoughts are taking flight.

I built her costume entirely from layered petals in sunset hues—golden yellows bleeding into hot pinks and coral—each one carefully shaped and textured to suggest the organic irregularity of nature's own designs. Her blue-gray limbs root her to the earth, while her face radiates an almost childlike joy. That expression was crucial to me; I wanted viewers to see themselves in that moment of discovering something magical in the natural world.

The textured surface throughout—from her stippled yellow bodice to the ruffled collar framing her face—adds a tactile quality that invites closer inspection. Standing on a bed of mycelium, she represents transformation, growth, and the beautiful strangeness that exists when we pay attention to the small wonders around us.
